Northern Indiana LAKES Magazine
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2007
Yes, summer's on the wane. The kids are back in school (finally!) and the frost will soon be on the pumpkin. That said, we're not rolling up the shutters or closing down the cottage quite yet! Not by a long shot!
There's so much to see and do in LAKES Country that one season can't even come close to handling it all. That's why we're checking in on the checkered past of the historic Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg combine; sitting out under the stars in rapt wonder; and counting down to fall with your favorite summer LAKES photos.
Have a sample of our latest issue, available now. Why, it's a break from the ordinary.

THE ELEGANT ENIGMA: E.L. CORD AND THE LOSS OF AN EMPIRE
As with most American car manufacturers who survived the Depression, E.L. Cord's Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg empire was having a tough time of things. The Cord 810 was one of their last, great gasps. That something so brilliant could have come out of such a troubled company in decline is nothing short of remarkable.

It sits on the edge of Lake Maxinkuckee in Marshall County, and it's a dignified gem. Fine food + good friends = one charming lakefront community. Like the old postcards said, "Wish you were here!"
|
The Potawatami Indians feared the waters were haunted by a supernatural serpent of great power. Time may have proven them right, because this is one lake that is positively bewitching!

Can you smell it? The air is crisp and clean, and the trees are turning bare. The first gentle wisps of snow are starting to appear and winter's winds will soon return. To many it is a magical time, rivaling summer for outdoor fun.
In our next issue we will explore the simple joys of gratitude; the Sweet Sensory Sensations of ... whisper it ... CHOCOLATE! Oh, and we'll also take a little trip on Indiana's own Polar Express.
