Northern Indiana LAKES Magazine

JULY 2007

There’s a lot of garbage in LAKES Country. No, we’re not talking about disgusting litter but rather the heavenly mishmash of hash browns, scrambled eggs, cheese, onions and ham that’s served up hot ‘n’ ready in little diners scattered throughout LAKES Country. One look at our cover story on Irresistible LAKES Country Treats and you’ll agree: There are some mighty fabulous food finds in our area!

Oh, and we’ll take a tour of a cozy little Crooked Lake cottage; witness the water-borne majesty of antique wooden boats; and go a-paddlin’ with 3-time U.S. Kayaking champion Steve Peterson. Just to air things out a bit.

Page through our latest issue and you’ll find oodles of info on people, lifestyle, homes and the great Indiana out-of-doors. Why, it’s a mental vacation, and all from the comfort of your easy chair. Talk about convenient!

LAKES COUNTRY FOOD FINDS

Avast! Stow the Slim-Fast, mateys, and toss the Trim-Spa! It's time to loosen our belts a bit and enjoy the gluttonous gastronomic delights of LAKES Country!

Let's face it...LAKES Country is well-nigh peppered with off-beat dining spots that pass the test... or should that be taste? ... of time. One thing's for certain: There's no lack of choice in these parts. Whether on the water, in the sticks or right smack in the middle of town, LAKES Country has it all. No matter if your tastes run from déclassé diners to upscale eateries that (believe it) put Manhattan's finest to shame, all are within easy driving distance.

WOOD THROUGH THE WATERS

"Every family is entitled to at least know the delights of Chris-Craft riding, the usefulness --- its joy-bringing and health-building properties. Let the tired businessman lengthen his life and give happiness to the whole family by providing them with the multiple of clean thrills and joys available only through Chris-Craft ownership…Chris-Crafting is recreation in itself. It recreates those who use it in body and mind."

Take a guess. When do you suppose our opening text appeared as ad copy for Chris-Craft boats? 1930. And yet, except for the outdated, gender-specific word "businessman," the copy could be polished up and used today.

TOWN PROFILE: Ligonier

The nostalgic downtown is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. America's first transcontinental road passes through town. The Indiana Historical Radio Museum broadcasts a rich local and national history.

But ask folks in Noble County to transmit the sights and sounds of Ligonier, and these boastings would be a mere sampling of praises.

LAKE PROFILE: Flint Lake

Flint Lake, whose shores the Potawatami Indians once called home, is the largest in a chain of lakes approximately three miles north of Valparaiso.

The 89-acre lake's halcyon days were enjoyed from the turn of the century into the 1930s, when affluent visitors from Chicago and northwest Indiana regions made it a summer destination of choice.
