Northern Indiana LAKES Magazine
AUGUST 2007
There is an essential goodness to the people of LAKES Country, as evidenced by our August issue. In its pages you'll meet average folks … they may be your friends, neighbors or kin … who have worked to change the world for the better.
Of course, there are other reasons to peruse the pages of Northern Indiana LAKES Magazine. It's the best-selling regional publication in the area; wander through the pages of our latest issue and you'll find oodles of information on the people, lifestyle, homes and outdoors that make Indiana's LAKES Country so charming.
Why, it's a mental vacation away from it all. And you don't even have to leave the comfort of your armchair.

HOMETOWN HEROES
For every headline-grabbing story about Paris Hilton in the Graybar Hotel there are other, less told-tales of inspiration. They speak of quiet determination and conviction to the communities we call home … they're the stories of rescuers, visionaries, physicians, entrepreneurs and activists. And they are the hidden treasures of LAKES Country.

IN PURSUIT OF THE FOX: A LAKE AND ITS HISTORY
The northern Steuben County lakes that surround Angola are perhaps some of the most well-known in northeast Indiana. While there are literally dozens of pristine lakes within a twenty-mile radius of the city, lakes James and George are often at the center of attention.
But just before you get to the famous Exit 151 off Interstate 69, which leads to these summer hot-spots, Exit 150 leading to U.S. Highway 20 east and west appears.
If you take the road less traveled, as the adage suggests, within a few short miles you could find yourself winding down a narrow road toward Fox Lake. While not renowned for its skiing, surrounding lodges, or restaurants, this 142-acre body of water nonetheless offers perhaps one of the richest histories of any Indiana lake.

Round homes. Indian lore. Circus performers. And even some way cool dude who used to swing on a vine in the movies. Say hello to Rochester (and we don't mean Jack Benny's faithful butler and chauffeur).

The Potawatomi referred to it as Manit-to and believed its water held a serpent of supernatural power. While no serpent has been spotted, it is home to largemouth bass, northern pike, redear, sunfish, yellow perch, black crappie and bluegill. It's a place of unimaginable beauty.
